Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport (DoT) on Saturday unveiled the first of 170 air-conditioned bus stops to be rolled out across the city by the summer.
The shelter, located on Bainunah Street near the UAE central bank, has eight seats and standing room for 16 people, UAE daily The National reported.
The DoT said it had plans to build a further 550 of the bus stops.
The department also said 100 air-conditioned buses were set to be delivered next month, with a further 400 on order.
It said by the end of 2009 there would be around 750 air-conditioned buses operating in Abu Dhabi, compared to around 270 currently.
