The Atlantis hotel in Dubai has rubbished a report it has slashed its room rates by as much as 90 percent from when it opened in September.
UAE daily Gulf News said on Sunday the average room rate at the hotel last week dropped to as low as $44 a night, down significantly from an average of $454 a night quoted when the hotel opened.
The newspaper said occupancy rates last week plummeted to as little as 26 percent, citing leaked official figures.
However, staff at the hotel said the story was "completely incorrect" when contacted by Arabian Business.
Staff said the cheapest room rate available was around $550 a night.
The $1.5 billion hotel on the Palm Jumeirah staged its grand opening on Thursday, which featured a performance by Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and a spectacular fireworks display.
The resort opened to guests on Sept. 24, despite a fire on Sept. 2 that destroyed the hotel lobby roof and caused smoke damage to the outside of the main hotel building.
The 1,539-room resort encompasses a 46-hectare site with 17 hectares of water-themed amusement parks, an open air marine habitat, beaches, boutiques and restaurants.

What with the fire, the purchase of wild Dolphines, the illegal purchase and confinement of the Whale Shark, and the crassness of the launch party! I don't think the 'competition' has anything to worry about!

Emirates and Atlantis ran a full page advertisement in the UK Sunday Times yesterday, offering three nights from £899 with a fourth night free, including return flight from the UK, airport transfers and breakfast included.
Bookings can be made via a travel agent up to December 18th. and the offer is based on two people sharing.

It seems to me there is far too much bad and misleading press about Atlantis for it not to be coming from the competition. Why would a 5* resort drop its prices to USD$44 when the competition on the Jumeirah strip is 10-15 times this amount. Also why did the reporter not get on the internet to look at the price, or call the hotel itself to verify the rumour. There seems to be constant rumours about this hotel, most of them bad, and you have to wonder where they are coming from. I'm sure in the beginning the hotel was suffering from too many people in the hotel for a soft opening to go successfully, but mostly I think the competition is worried and there is foul play afoot.
