Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made 1.7 billion dirhams ($463 million) from the sale of the naming rights to 13 Dubai Metro stations, UAE daily Emirates Business reported on Sunday.
The newspaper said companies - including Deira City Centre, Mall of the Emirates, Du, Etisalat, First Gulf Bank, Sharaf DG and Nakheel - paid on average 13 million dirhams for the 10-year deal.
The amount paid for the naming rights varied depending on the location, Emirates Business said.
The 13 stations are the first of 23 that companies can purchase the naming rights for. The RTA has reserved 10 stations for names reflecting the UAE's heritage.

There's something wrong with the maths in this article. If the govt has made 1.7 billion dirhams for 10 year deals on 13 stations, it would average out to 130 million, not 13 million as the article states.

From the list of companies none of them are global brands. Does this say something about the current economic climate or does it say something about the opportunity to brand a Metro station is not such a great investment? Emaar was not on the list of UAE companies...hmmm?

Would it not make more sense to choose names reflecting the location of the stations...as opposed to "reflecting the UAE's heritage"? Obviously they haven't made enough money out of repeatedly failing people on their driving tests, salik, ID cards and other such money-spinners.
