Netgear looks to smart home market with new Powerline adapters

Netgear is aiming to cash in on demand for smart home technology, with the launch of its latest Powerline adapter kits.

The worldwide market for smart home technology is predicted to reach $10 billion by 2010, according to Frost & Sullivan, and Netgear believes that while some property developers are looking to create properties with IP networks built in, a simpler, more pervasive solution will be to adapt existing power infrastructure to accommodate high speed networking.

Ahmad Zeidan, channel sales manager, Netgear Middle East said: “If a market [for smart home technology] does develop, it seems less likely to come from impetus in the building, construction or property sectors. The greater opportunity for growth in the use of smart home technology appears to be from its addition to the burgeoning array of consumer electronics - especially home entertainment and personal communication systems - and initial demand from the more technology-literate early-adopter households.”

To help cater to this demand, Netgear has released its Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (XAVB101), which will allow consumers to set up a home network, with speeds up to 200 Mbps, just by plugging in the adapter to a normal power outlet and an Internet connection, with additional adapter acting as ethernet ports around the home.

The adapter kit has a plug and play design, and is compatible with the HomePlug AV standard.

The kit also features push-button data encryption for added security, and a built-in power socket so that the adapter doesn’t take up a power outlet.

“The increasing demand for consistent high-speed Internet connectivity throughout the entire home has compelled networking providers to develop new products that are not only fast and reliable, but also simple to install for the average consumer,” Zeidan added.
