The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) will be heavily dependent on imported equipment and technical staff to provide the event’s sound and projection setups, according to organisers.
While festival organisers have recruited the help of some local providers, such as Dubai-based Gearhouse Staging Connections which will provide much of the event’s basic infrastructure, the vast majority of technical expertise and projection equipment will be brought in from overseas.
The festival will employ a team of approximately 25 technical staff and around five technical directors. The specialist team are being flown in from overseas to monitor projections on around 15 screens at the event.
Shivani Pandya, DIFF’s managing director said the imported projection specialists would be among the most senior staff at the event.
“The projection equipment will be provided by Boston Light and Sound in the US and quite a lot of that will be imported,” said Pandya.
“We will bring all the projectors in from overseas and we will also be working closely with Sony and Gearhouse Staging Connections.”
She said the festival would utilise local expertise in terms of sound, with Gearhouse Staging Connections again providing much of the equipment.
Boston Light and Sound will be the major provider of projection equipment, continuing its history of involvement with the international festival.
DIFF is now in its fifth year and has continually grown in scope from previous years. With 181 films being shown from 66 countries, the show experienced close to 150 percent growth since its inaugural year.
The rapid growth has inevitably created an increased demand for technical support and equipment. Despite the growth in demand, organisers are still sourcing the bulk of sound and projection equipment and technical support for the festival from off-shore.
