Intelligent Energy has introduced a new air conditioning product to the Middle East market, which provides cooling through tiles in the floor.
The system, called Aircon-floor uses clay tiles with chambers on the surface for piping. Cool or hot air is then passed through the tiles in order to cool, heat or ventilate a room.
"The concept is based on a very old Italian system where there was a fire outside and heat was pumped through buildings with clay tiles," said Intelligent Energy director Edward Earl. "The running costs are cheaper than conventional air conditioning by some way and unlike regular air conditioning where there is a constant humming, there is no noise."
The firm has been in talks with a project in Bahrain to install the system into villas. Air is pumped through the tiles using a small electrical unit. The product was designed in Germany and has been available in Europe previously.
The clay tiles can be covered with carpet; wooden tiles are any other material without affecting performance. Earl reported that clay takes a short time to either heat up or cool down and also allows for quick installation.
Earl added: "The amount of electricity used by air conditioning in this region is alarming. This system can help save on that energy. Although the initial costs are a little higher, the running costs are low and the payback period is between three to five years."
