Louvre experts to advise on new Kuwait palaces

Kuwait is to work with officials at the world famous Louvre Museum in Paris as it draws up plans for two new cultural palaces in the Gulf state.

Cultural cooperation between Kuwait and France has been ongoing for decades and information minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid al-Sabah revealed on Tuesday that experts at the Louvre would be advising on plans for the Sheikh Jaber Cultural Palace and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Palace.

"We have placed a timetable for cooperation with the renowned museum, and we will be cooperating in the establishment of Sheikh Jaber Cultural Palace and Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Palace," he said in comments reported by news agency KUNA.

His comments came on the sidelines of the inauguration of the "Memoires d'Arabies" exhibition, organised by the French Embassy and Kuwait Arts Association.

He added that there were also plans for joint programmes with the Paris-based Arab World Institute, adding: "Kuwait is keen on being present on the world's cultural map, so as to benefit from the exchange of experiences and spread Arab and Islamic culture."

The Louvre is also closely connected to Abu Dhabi with plans to build a branch of France's famous museum in the emirate.

The new museum is being built in Saadiyat Island (Island of Happiness), a $27-$29 billion luxury resort project with marinas, shops and art centres including the world's largest Guggenheim, designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry.
