ON THE UP: MIDEX is negotiating for a second B747.

Al Ain-based scheduled all-cargo carrier MIDEX Airlines remains confident that despite the travails of the global airfreight sector, its business plan is on course to meet with strong growth during the course of 2009.

The company is currently negotiating to purchase a second B747 freighter, which MIDEX hopes will start operating in the third quarter of 2009. The first 747 started operations to the carrier's long-haul Orly hub in late November.

"We are working hard to obtain landing rights in India, which we hope to win in around a month's time," said Jassim Al Bastaki, director general of MIDEX Airlines.

"We see immense potential there, and hope to pick up the available freight that has been left behind as other carriers have withdrawn from the country."

The company met its target of carrying 7000 tonnes of cargo on its Al Ain-Orly via Damascus route during the last four months and now has a total of 45 pilots, supported by 20 engineers and 30 operational administrative staff.

"Of course, we committed to providing a scheduled service to all our destinations at a time when the oil price was at its highest, and I am proud to say we just managed to break even in that period," added Al Bastaki. "Now that the price is at around US$55 a barrel, our margins have been significantly improved."
