Winners of the MEP Middle East Awards 2008 were announced at a gala dinner last night. A total of 14 awards were presented to 11 different companies from across the sector.
Buro Happold won the Supreme Judge’s Award for its work on sustainability. Other prominent winners included Drake & Scull, Hyder Consulting, and Thermo, whose work on Dubai Airport’s Terminal 3 won the company the Major MEP Project of the Year Award.
"We are immensely proud, I think there are some great organisations operating in this country and to be working with them and to be winning an award against the competition that we have in this market is fantastic,” said Phil Dalglish director Buro Happold. “I think it’s the hard work and effort of all the Buro Happold M&E engineers over the last two or three years, not just in Dubai, but the whole region. I’m immensely excited."
The Young Engineer of the Year Award went to 24-year-old Barry O’Reilly a mechanical design engineer with Hyder Consulting.
"I’m delighted, it is a great honour to be chosen,” said O’Reilly. “I’m sure it was a tough decision, but I’m pretty honoured to get it."
The other individual award of the night went to a delighted Devnath Sampath of Voltas, who won Project Manager of the Year.
"I have a deep appreciation for the MEP judges, who have recognised the efforts I have put in, which are purely in the interest of developing the industry in this country,” said Sampath. “My commitment to this industry is unquestionable, in every aspect of developing new concepts - including adapting green building concepts. The encouragement given by my company, and the support from my deputy CEO has been instrumental [in winning this award]."
The awards were judged by an independent panel of industry experts, which comprised Dr Mohsen Aboulnaga, a professor in architecture and sustainable built environment, and advisor to the executive council for the government of Dubai; Yousef Alshaer, president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Emirates Falcon Chapter; and Mick Dalton senior director property management with Emaar Properties, and a member of the UAE steering committee for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
