Festival challenge for celeb chef

by ArabianBusiness.com staff writer  on Thursday, 04 December 2008
American chef Kerry Heffernan said the Jumeirah Festival of Taste was a fantastic test of his abilities.

Dubai was overflowing with flavours last month thanks to Jumeirah's Festival of Taste, a week-long celebration of food.

A host of celebrity chefs came together for events at Jumeirah resorts across the emirate, including a gala dinner hosted by Michel Roux, a cooking demonstration by Ainsley Harriott and a boat trip luncheon with Jean-Christophe Novelli and Brian Turner.

Kerry Heffernan, the executive chef at Jumeirah-owned Essex House in New York, spoke exclusively to Caterer Middle East about the festival - and admitted it was a challenging event.

"There's the age-old concern: can I stand up in this company of Michelin star chefs?" he explained.

"This kind of festival takes you out of your element and is a welcome test of your abilities."

The celebrity chefs at the festival came together on the final night of the festival to help raise money for charity at an auction during a gourmet gala in the Burj Al Arab.

A staggering AED 84,486 (US $23,000) was paid for an Evian bottle specially created by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix, which smashed the world record for the most expensive litre of water ever auctioned.
