Initiatives curb Dubai factory fires by 20%

The number of fires in Dubai has been cut by 20 percent following the introduction of new safety campaigns, civil defence officials said on Tuesday.

The direct alarm system and Safety First inspection campaign were launched by Dubai Civil Defence following a number of incidents in the emirate which were largely attributed to the failure in abiding by preventive and safety standards in warehouses, factories and labour accommodations.

Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, director of Dubai Civil Defence, said following initiatives had had a positive impact on the number of blazes in Dubai.

"The room (control centre) has not received any report of fire or break down in any of the fire alarm systems from the buildings that are connected to the system," he said in comments published by UAE daily Gulf News on Tuesday.

"There are currently 300 connected buildings and we have inspected around 9,000 various establishments to check their preparedness to be connected to the system," he added.

In October, the Dubai Civil Defence announced the beginning of execution of the direct alarm system at all non-private residential buildings in Dubai.

The project of connecting buildings with a direct alarm system to the control centre of the civil defence aims at protecting lives and properties by detecting the fire at its early stages and getting detailed information on the accident site.

In June, Dubai Civil Defence launched the largest preventive inspection campaign covering all geographical sectors that have factories, warehouses, temporary and permanent labour accommodations in the first phase.

The Safety First campaign involved 10 inspection teams who carried out stringent inspections on the implementation of international safety standards.
