Dozens of cash machines across Dubai were reportedly out of order on Monday during one of the busiest shopping holidays of the year.

Shoppers at Ibn Battuta Mall and Mall of the Emirates were left frustrated as many ATM machines failed to dispense cash, UAE daily The National reported on Tuesday.

Several ATMs at Ibn Battuta Mall were without power or were inaccessible in locked bank kiosks, while cash machines at Mall of the Emirates displayed messages saying they were not dispensing, the paper said.

Dubai malls reported large numbers of shoppers from across the country during Eid al Adha when banks have been closed and apparently not been able to respond as quickly as usual to complaints from customers about malfunctioning ATMs.

The ATMs of National Bank of Dubai, Commercial Bank of Dubai and Barclays in Ibn Battuta mall were reportedly out of order for several hours on Monday before being fixed.

And RAK Bank and HSBC had closed off their small banking kiosks during the holiday, preventing customers from reaching the ATMs inside.

Several ATMs at Mall of the Emirates were empty and without reserves, and they remained un-replenished during peak shopping hours, according to employees.

“They’re usually out of cash during the holiday season,” said a customer service representative at the mall told the paper. “Every minute there’s a person withdrawing cash, so you can understand why this happens.”

ATM Machines Out of Order
Posted by Sanaa Iqbal, Sharjah, UAE on Wednesday 10 December 2008 at 09:00 UAE time

I faced the same problem on the National Day holiday on Tuesday. The unfortunate bit was that there was no sign on the DIB ATM Machine in Sahara Centre to indicate that the cash was over. Therefore, it did not dispense the cash but deducted the amount from my account. Therefore, I had no cash in hand but the amount was gone!!
