Qtel is warning customers to beware of a phishing attack that aims to steal account and personal details of Internet users.
The phishing email, which was received by staff at itp.net and passed on to Qtel, offers customers new, improved email services, but requests that users provide account name, password and date of birth within two weeks or risk losing the account.
The mail, with the subject header ‘The All-New Qatar Internet Services! You Must Be A Part Of It To Avoid De-activativation Of Your Internet Qatar Email’ purports to come from ‘Qatar Internet Services’.
In a statement released to the press, Qtel warns that request for details is fraudulent, and that the company’s internet security team is taking steps to trace the source of the phishing attempt, and to block the IP address.
Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications said: “Qtel will never ask our customers to send personal details and passwords via e-mail or by text message. We are doing everything we can to prevent this type of fraud from taking place in Qatar and look to cooperate with our customers in finding and defeating this threat.”
Customers can report fraud at the Qtel customer care page .
