Bahrain saw a 200% increase in the number of e-government transactions processed through it’s eGovernment Authority (eGA) portal in 2008.
The portal, which handles debit and credit card payments for government entities, handled 12,550 transactions worth around BD 940,000 ($2.49m) since the start of the year. The overall value of transactions was up 250% from the previous year.
The eGA said the rise was due to the increasing number of services that are available through the portal, including payment of utility bills, traffic fines, pre-employment medical checkups, and tuition fees for the University of Bahrain.
The authority has also recently signed a deal with Gulf Business Machines to develop the portal infrastructure to support a further tenfold growth in transactions.
Mohammed Al Qaed, CEO of eGA said: “These figures clearly demonstrate the growing trust and acceptance of the eGA National Portal among the public and government entities, and also goes to show the effectiveness of the services available through it, especially financial ones.
“The increase in usage of the eGA National Portal comes shortly after it won the Arab GoldenChip Award for the best eGovernment Application in the Middle East, and we will continue our efforts in offering the best eGovernment services to all sectors of the Bahraini community through the eGA National Portal,” he added.
