PALM PLANT: A new desalination plant will launch in mid-2009 to supply drinking water for the Atlantis hotel and other developments on Palm Jumeirah.

Palm Utilities has commissioned a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant to supply drinking water to the Atlantis and other developments within the Palm Jumeirah's Crescent, the Dubai water and district cooling company has announced.

An additional seawater water treatment plant will be launched in mid 2009, bringing the total daily capacity of both facilities to 64,000 cubic metres, the firm said.

The treatment projects are part of an agreement that will hand over ownership and ongoing stewardship responsibilities for the water and sewage infrastructure of Palm Jumeirah to Palm Water, Palm Utilities’ water utility division.

Sewage collection, treatment and transportation, along with distribution of drinking water, irrigation and fire fighting water and industrial water and collection of chiller blowdown water are among the areas of work Palm Water will carry out under the agreement.

Palm Utilities has also revealed plans to pursue new business ventures within other utilities including sustainable energy and environmental waste management.

In addition, the company said it was looking to expand its operations overseas and had initiated talks for new business prospects with potential partners in the Middle East, India and the rest of Asia.

Palm Utilities was set up in 2007 by Istithmar World, the investment arm of the Dubai World group of companies, a government-owned conglomerate which also includes Nakheel, the developer of the three Palm islands.
