Scratching the surface at Assimilate roadshow

Distributors of Assimilate’s Scratch digital process solution held a series of workshops on the software in Dubai, to demonstrate the post production capabilities of the product to local filmmakers. Digital Image hosted the demonstration, which attracted the interest of around 15 local industry professionals.

Around half of the attendees at the event were users of the new Red camera, for which Scratch is designed. The software allows ease of use with the camera’s 4K files.

Each filmmaker was given an individual demonstration of Scratch, which was recently used as the stereoscopic 3D workflow post production solution for Walden Media’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Dubai-based filmmaker, Ziad Oakes, who currently works predominantly on short films and commercials, said that Scratch could be helpful for Red users in post. “If you have a Red camera, then Scratch is a good option because it gives you full capabilities with the type of files the camera uses,” explained Oakes.

“For me, however, Scratch is slightly outside of my budget. There are still a lot of other workflow solutions that can be used with the Red, and I think Scratch would probably make a better feature-film partner than a commercials partner.”

Mohamed Dafer, managing director of Digital Image said his company would be holding similar demonstration events for Assimilate’s Scratch right across the MENA region.

“The solution is available right across the Middle East,” said Dafer. “We are running these individual demonstration events as part of our personal approach to doing business.”

Organisers said the next event following the Dubai conference would be held in Lebanon, and Syria was another potential location for the roadshow.
