Qtel has reported that internet service in Qatar has been restored to its full capacity.

The operator says that disruption to services which began following damage to three undersea cables in the Mediterranean Sea on 19th December, is now over.

In a report released today, Qtel says that it was able to restrict loss of capacity to below 47% of total, which given a 20% redundancy margin meant the actual impact on traffic overall was less than 27%.

The operator attributed the relatively low impact to its policy of distributing traffic evenly between western cables, including the cables affected in the Mediterranean, and eastern cables that connect through Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.

Qtel was able to switch traffic to the eastern cables within six hours of the initial damage reports.

The company also reported that private networks that have been created by Qtel for corporate clients in Qatar allowed those companies to carry on operating without any deterioration in services.
