Abu Dhabi International Airport has secured approval for low visibility ground operations, the hub’s operator has announced.
Abu Dhabi Airports Company said the approval, the first of its kind in the Middle East, allows for aircraft movements in poor weather conditions.
The CAT III B certification will cover the airport’s newly operational second runway when visibility drops below 200m.
According to ADAC, the approval will help reduce delays in foggy conditions.
“Safety is the number one priority for ADAC and is something we look to reflect across all our operations,” said HE Khalifa bin Mazrouei, chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports Company.
“The classification of Abu Dhabi International as CAT III B compliant demonstrates our commitment to offering safe and convenient travel experiences to all our passengers and our airline partners.”
Under the previous CAT II classification and General Civil Aviation Authority rules, all takeoffs and landings at Abu Dhabi airport were cancelled when visibility fell below 200m.
