Microsoft revels in Xbox 360 success

Microsoft is celebrating the success of its popular game console Xbox 360 that enjoyed a record year in 2008.
It was the year the most Xbox 360 consoles, games and online entertainment experiences were sold in its history.
Unit sales rose to 28 million consoles globally, which has expanded its lead against competitor PlayStation 3 by more than 8 million units.
Microsoft states that the console is experiencing record sales worldwide, particularly in Japan and Europe where its market share has nearly doubled. In the EMEA region, Xbox 360 has now sold more than 8 million units, with a lead over PS3 by 1 million units.
The Xbox LIVE community also grew to more than 17 million active members, reflecting the 84% increase in online consumer spending compared to last year. Microsoft also revealed that more than $1 billion has been spent on Xbox LIVE since its launch three years ago in the US.
βFor Xbox, 2008 will be remembered around the world as a pivotal growth year at retail β even in the face of tough economic conditions,β said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, adding that the "...best of Xbox 360 is yet to come.β
