Qatar is targeting a 400 percent rise in hotel capacity by 2012 with the addition of a whopping $17 billion of investment, according to the coutry's tourist authority.

The plan drawn up by the Qatar Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (QTEA) includes construction of luxury hotels, resorts and other leisure facilities, with a total of up to 29,000 luxury rooms by 2012. A total of 80,000 hotel rooms in various ranges will be available by 2016.

“QTEA has a very practical strategy targeting an increase of 20 percent of new travellers in the next five years,” said a statement issued on Sunday adn reported in Qatar daily, The Peninsula.

This strategy would be achieved by attracting five percent of passengers travelling through the Doha International Airport and asking them to stay an extra 48 hours in the country past their initial scheduled time.

The total number of travellers would thus go up to 2.5 million, the statement added.

I agree with G. Coffey, moreover the quality of staff that they would get, at what salaries they could HIGHJACK from other Chain hotels in the region or from INDAI, PAKISTAN, PHILIPINES, SIRI LANKA, South America, South Africa....and their cost of repatriation.

GOOD LUCK
Qatar's targets 400% Rise in Hotel Capacity

It's good to have a target or aim but 29,000 rooms in 4 years would be say 72 Hotels of 400 room capacity, that's 18 hotels to complete a year. By comparison the City Centre project Qatar has 4 Hotels under construction and has been running for at least 3 years and has yet to be finalized! I would be interested to see the time table for this.
