Mobile operator Zain Madagascar has hired telecom vendor Ericsson to upgrade its core network and GSM radio access network, as it seeks to expand its operations and compete with rival mobile operators Orange Madagascar Telma Mobile.
Ericsson will deploy its packet core network, including SGSN and GGSN nodes, and a mobile soft-switch solution, helping the Zain Group subsidiary move towards an all-IP core network.
Jan Embro, head of sub-Saharan Africa for Ericsson, said the upgrade will employ a layered architecture that will allow Zain to use its existing infrastructure and ensure a “common foundation” for new services. The new architecture will also allow the operator to reduce the number and size of its main core network sites.
“With this network expansion, Zain Madagascar will be able to meet subscriber growth and increased demand for its mobile services. It will also help the operator reduce its network operating expenses through improved network capacity, performance and operational efficiency,” Embro said.
Ericsson will also provide systems integration, field maintenance and support services to Zain Madagascar.
