Companies sign deal for green energy plan

Abu Dhabi's Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has announced a partnership deal with Masdar to develop sustainable energy and water at a new tourism destination.

Sir Bani Yas Island, one of eight natural islands which make up Desert Islands off Abu Dhabi's Al Gharbia (Western region) recently launched phase one which features a 64-room resort and spa, nature conservation area and variety of adventure and nature-based activities.

The TDIC-Masdar agreement will aim to develop a number of sustainable energy and water initiatives as part of the island's emphasis on preservation, company chiefs revealed.

Mubarak al-Muhairi, TDIC's managing director, said: "This agreement enhances our sustainability credentials and represents an important step in our commitment to environmental and conservation tourism.

"We continue to build best-in-class partnerships in order to fulfil our obligations and responsibilities to ensure that Sir Bani Yas and the rest of the Desert Islands become a regional showpiece of sustainability."

Masdar and TDIC will dedicate management and technical expertise to determine the feasibility of developing an energy and water farm on the island, he said.

The two companies will also research other development activities, such as alternative eco-friendly transportation systems, recycling waste to energy systems.

"Not only will this help Desert Islands to minimise the environmental impact but it sends a clear message about Abu Dhabi's intention to play a decisive role in the future use and direction of future energy," added Muhairi.
