Certain Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives have been reportedly failing because of a ‘firmware issue’.
“In some unique circumstances, the data on the hard drives may become inaccessible to the user when the host system is powered on,” said Seagate in a formal acknowledgement of a problem that’s been doing the rounds on many technology support forums for months.
Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives manufactured through December 2008 are affected, though Seagate has not offered details for any specific region, including the Middle East.
To address the issue, Seagate is offering a free firmware upgrade through their website for affected drives and has assured its customers that even if data cannot be accessed, it can be retrieved.
Seagate added that it is “working with customers to expedite a remedy.”
