Qatar Airways is aiming to become the world's first airline to power its fleet on eco-friendly gas-to-liquids (GTL) kerosene oil, it has been announced.
The airline's CEO Akbar al-Baker said its aircraft engines would be certified by aviation authorities for GTL use by the end of 2009.
Qatar Airways has already signed an agreement with QP, Shell, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Qatar Science & Technology Park and Woqod as part of the carrier’s project to launch GTL-powered flights, Gulf Times reported on Tuesday.
GTL kerosene is environmentally-friendly and is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions. It is dubbed “green fuel” because of its non-polluting features.
“Since it is a normal fuel, the engines do not require any modification. Also, additional facilities are not required at Doha International Airport to store it,” he told the paper.
Qatar has invested billions of dollars in setting up two gas-to-liquids projects at Ras Laffan.
Al-Baker said Qatar’s GTL producers would make available adequate quantities of gas-to-liquid fuel the airline required for its flights.
