Plans to build a modern labour city, designed to meet the needs of Qatar's growing expat labourer population, is scheduled for completion in 2011, the project chief has announced.
The second phase of Barwa Al Baraha, which will accommodate 53,000 workers in a QR3.4 billion development, will include 64 accommodation buildings, with each building consisting of four floors with 130 rooms each.
“The work will be finished in 24 months after the contract is given,” said Barwa CEO Ibrahim al-Fakhroo in comments published in the Gulf Times on Thursday, adding that the contract is expected to be awarded in two months.
The labour city is being built as the second phase of Barwa Al Baraha in Doha, the first phase of which, a truck parking facility, opened on Wednesday.
Chairman and managing director of Barwa Real Estate, Ghanim bin Saad al-Saad, told the paper: “Expatriate workers have become an essential part of our society, especially during the unprecedented prosperity of the Qatari economy.
“The workers now building Qatar deserve our best welcome and a decent living environment. Hence was born the idea of Barwa Al Baraha."
The project also includes eight dining halls, a central laundry, 48 shops in each block and public and green spaces.
A mosque, a football ground, basketball and volleyball courts, billiards and snooker rooms and a cricket pitch are also proposed.
Barwa Al Baraha will also have its own police department, civil defence and fire fighting units, a medical centre and a health club.

So doing the Maths on this they are talking about 6.37 people per room, Thats hardly “The workers now building Qatar deserve our best welcome and a decent living environment." I wonder how many people mr Al Saad shares his room with, Eight Dining halls for 53,000 people, that sounds more like a prison than Luxury living
