Fifty new London-style cabs are now in operation on Bahrain's roads in an initiative that will create jobs for 700 Bahrainis.
The Arabian Taxi Company launched its first batch of the new company's cabs on Sunday, with the rest of the 314-fleet expected to be on the roads by April.
The fleet includes 200 London-style cabs and 114 other models suitable for larger groups and families, Gulf Daily News reported on Monday.
The new taxi service is the result of a joint initiative between Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) and the Economic Development Board (EDB).
EDB chief executive Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa told the paper the new company would secure more than 700 new jobs for Bahrainis.
"Bahrain is improving the quality of services delivered to Bahrainis, residents and visitors in order to build a better lifestyle and to achieve Vision 2030," he said.
Each of the custom-made, metered cabs are fitted with Global Positioning System technology and connected electronically to a control centre to ensure passengers are not overcharged.
