LG is looking to bring affordable touch screen mobiles to first time users with the launch of its LG Cookie (KP500) handset.

The phone, which includes touch screen, motion sensor and other high end features, is intended to be easy to use and not as expensive as some high end handsets, in order to appeal to a broader consumer market.

KW Kim, CEO of LG Electronics Middle East and Africa commented: “The LG Cookie was conceived to reflect the desire of many consumers who want to own a full touch-screen phone at a reasonable price. A more diverse segment of people will be able to experience the pleasure of using touch-screen phones as we expand our line-up in this range in the second half of this year.”

The Cookie includes an Active Flash user interface, with widget icons that can be arranged by the user, and a stylus that can be used for input.

The handset, which is slim at 11.9mm thick and lightweight at 89g, includes analogue and world clock, calendar, picture frame, memo, MP3 player and FM radio.

The handset also comes with motion sensor for games and other applications, and automatic synchronisation with Windows Media Player for quick uploads and simple music file management.

The Cookie is available now, and costs 999 dhs ($271).

LG says that it will also launch a campaign, under the banner of ‘Free Touch’ which will aim to promote the capabilities of its touch screen range.
