Qatar Airways has taken delivery of its first Boeing 777-200LR, extending the airline’s fleet to 66 aircraft, it announced on Sunday.
The long-range plane arrived at Doha International Airport following a 15 hour journey from Boeing’s manufacturing plant in Seattle.
This aircraft will be deployed on Qatar Airways’ service to Houston, Texas, which launches on March 30. According to the airline, this route will be one of the world’s longest non-stop flights.
Before the Houston launch, the Boeing 777 will carry passengers to destinations across the Middle East and South Asia.
In November 2007, Qatar Airways ordered 32 Boeing 777 passenger and cargo aircraft, comprising 14 777-300ERs, six 777-200LRs and seven 777-200 Freighters. There are options for a further five Boeing 777s.
Of the Boeing planes ordered, six 777s have already been delivered with the remaining 26 aircraft expected to arrive within two years. The planes will be used to operate Qatar Airways’ long-haul fleet.
“With a flying range of up to 17 hours non-stop, this aircraft will offer passengers ultimate levels of comfort and service to ultra long-haul destinations direct from Doha,” said Qatar Airways’ CEO Akbar Al Baker. “The aircraft also features unrivalled facilities, which will certainly provide our competitors with something to think about.”
The Boeing 777-200LR features 42 business class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration. Meanwhile, a 3-3-3 configuration for the 217 economy seats is in place.
