A federal judge has ruled that Psystar can go ahead with its countersuit against Apple in a copyright war that’s expected to heat up in the coming months.

Psystar has been selling its ‘OpenMac’ line of Intel-powered computers with Mac OS X preinstalled since April last year, which Apple claims infringes on copyright and software-licensing policies.

A Psystar Open computer running the Apple OS can cost as little as $555 or AED 2,000.

In response, Psystar alleged Apple is in violation of several antitrust laws and is restraining trade. A federal judge dismissed this claim in November but offered Psystar the opportunity to modify its complaint, resulting in a revised lawsuit filed in December.

Now Psystar has been given the legal green light to amend its lawsuit that initially accused Apple of breaking antitrust laws to instead argue that it stretched copyright laws by tying the Mac OS to its hardware. The case is expected to begin trial on November 9th.

If Psystar emerges victorious, it could motivate other companies to take a slice at Apple.
