In an impressive move that many residents in Saudi Arabia will welcome, the STC will be providing free wireless internet services to public areas in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom.

Eastern Province governor Prince Muhammad bin Fahd signed an agreement with the telco to provide internet access at the Al Khobar and Dammam corniche, and on the highway linking the two cities.

The first phase of the project has already gone live last week, with officials clarifying that it would cover 18 kilometres of the Al Khobar corniche, 15 kilometres of the Dammam corniche and part of the Dammam-Al Khobar expressway.

“This project is one of the major achievements in telecommunication and the Internet (accessibility),” Zarab bin Saeed Al-Qahtani, undersecretary at the Eastern Province governorate, told state daily Arab News.

“This is the largest wireless telecommunication project in the region to provide free internet services using the most advanced technology,” added Al-Qahtani.
