YouTube goes offline

The popular video content sharing website YouTube is testing an option that will allow videos to be downloaded either for free or for a small fee.

According to the official YouTube blog, many members are eager to have their work seen far and wide and, using Creative Commons Licenses, YouTube is now giving its partners the choices to make that happen.

With this new option, video owners will have the choice of offering their videos as a free or paid download through Google Checkout.

Some partners have already started testing the new service including Khanacademy, Householdhacker and Pogobat.

International universities such as Stanford and UC Berkeley that use YouTube to share lectures and research studies are also testing free downloads.

Videos available for download currently have a link under the left corner of the playback screen with a label that mentions the fee of the video.
