Gulf Air will expand its fleet this year after agreeing to lease four Boeing 777-ERs from Jet Airways.
Three of the planes will arrive next month while the fourth is expected in May.
The aircraft will be deployed on several Gulf and international routes, including London, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok.
Bjorn Naf, Gulf Air chief executive officer, said leasing new planes is part of the Bahraini airline’s strategy to phase out its A340 fleet.
“The introduction of these four aircraft is another important step in our strategic direction towards re-fleeting, enhancing our product and strengthening our presence as the carrier of choice in the Middle East and beyond,” he said.
”In addition it will further strengthen our successful hub-and-spoke network and our operational efficiency while offering enhanced passenger comfort and flying experience.”
Naf added that the 777 was a world-leading aircraft that would help attract more passengers to Gulf Air.
The wide body Boeing 777-300ER is the world’s largest long-range twin-engine commercial plane.
It has 312 seats, split across first, business and economy class, in three-class configurations.
Aside from the 777s, Gulf Air has two A330 aircraft on short-term wet-lease from Jet Airways.
