Two year sentence for former UAE minister

A former UAE minister has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of unlawfully taking possession of a company and property belonging to his former business partner, it was reported on Monday.

The Public Prosecution had charged the Emirati ex-minister, along with his businessman son, US general manager and Indian financial manager, with deception over a 51 percent share in a Lebanese businessman's company, that was carried out when he died.

The four were accused of tricking the businessman’s sister in to waiving her brother's share in the company after his death, because she was told the former minister was an actual partner in the business, rather than just a sponsor.

The general manager and financial expert were also sentenced to two years, but the ex-minister’s son was acquitted due to a lack of evidence, according to UAE daily The National.  

The Misdemeanours Court Judge Hamad Abdullatif, said the expatriates would be deported from the country after serving their sentence.

He also ordered the case against the three convicted to be referred to the Dubai Civil Court where further action could be taken.

The defendants, none of whom were in court, have 15 days to appeal the ruling.

Under UAE law the three men found guilty in the case cannot be named until the justice process comes to a conclusion.
