RJ launches inflight mobile phone services

MOBILE SERVICE: Royal Jordanian Airlines is now offering a mobile service on one of its A319s.

Royal Jordanian Airlines has launched inflight mobile phone services on one of its A319s, the carrier announced on Monday.

Passengers travelling on the aircraft, which will fly to Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and India, can make and receive calls and text messages using their mobile phone or Blackberry.

The communications system, created by inflight communications developer OnAir, also allows travellers to access the internet while airborne.

“Royal Jordanian has always been a leader in e-travel—from providing passengers with the ability to book online to issuing e-tickets, making online seat reservations and using self check-in kiosks at the airport,” said Samer Majali, president and CEO of Royal Jordanian Airlines.

He added: “We expect these new capabilities to further enhance the high-quality customer service that our passengers have come to expect from Royal Jordanian.”

Since December 2007, OnAir’s inflight communications services have been used on 2,500 commercial flights to more than 74 cities in Europe and North Africa.

According to OnAir, a recent survey revealed that 80% of passengers that have used mobile phones while airborne would like the service on every flight.
