Saudi gov't plans more job training for women

Women in Saudi Arabia are to be offered improved job opportunities under a government initiative that aims to increase training in healthcare, community care and technical administration, it was reported on Tuesday.

The move, headed by King Abdullah, aims to get more women to take up posts in women’s health centres, prisons and to operate computer equipment in office environments, said the Council of Ministers following a meeting on Monday.

Crèche facilities would also be made available under the education initiative that will be run by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation, according to Saudi daily Arab News.

“Kindergartens will be made part and parcel of the education system and the jobs there will be restricted to women,” culture and information minister Abdul Aziz Khoja told the Saudi Press Agency.

The moves come a week after the first female minister was sppointed the Saudi ruling Council by King Abdullah as part of a radical governement shake up.

Norah Al Fayez will act as deputy education minister for female affiars, that was hailed a great move for women in the Kingdom.  

Job opportunities in the female education sector should also be made a priority by the Ministry of Education and other training organisations, the meeting agreed.

I for one think it is admirable of this step and opportunities for women in KSA. I for one would love to be there only if I can work, drive and live peacefully there, of course within the islamic norms which will be there irespective of where one is living.

The best way to improve women's position in the job market is to allow them equal opportunities and education. Why continue to maintain this women in women's jobs? Men and women are equal, stop treating women like 2nd rate citizens.
