A $3.2m wireless network for ground and air communications will be installed at Bahrain International Airport, aviation officials have announced.
Bahrain’s civil aviation affairs department said installation of the radio network will take place in stages. The first stage will enable 640 ground handlers and airline staff to correspond through voice and data communication.
The ‘professional mobile radio’ system, created by IT communication technology developer SITA, will be accessible to more than 800 workers as Bahrain airport expands.
“The integrity of the radio coverage is constantly checked by a radio-link test system and the ‘signal coding’ within the system protects against eavesdropping,” said Captain Abdul Rahman Al Gaoud, undersecretary for civil aviation affairs. “We are already looking to a second phase which will provide us with additional features.”
A second phase of integration may involve installing a radio frequency identification system. If introduced, guards will have to swipe RFID tags to access certain areas around the airport.
Technology alerting flight crew to changes or updates on services arriving at and departing from the airport may also be installed.
