Dubai firm debuts mini mobile notebook

UAE-based MID and mobile services firm Nawaiya will release a 7” touchscreen mini mobile notebook in the coming months.

The company’s PalmTop is believed to be the first notebook in this size to have an AMD processor and ATI graphic cards.

Nawaiya is known for making specialised products and made headlines in 2007 with the launch of its touchscreen MID (Mobile Internet Device) – ‘Interactive Lifestyle Manager’, which was well-received in the market. Both products have been supported in large by the MENA arm of Advanced Micro Devices.

“We don’t compare PalmTop to netbook (even though PalmTop is smaller) because customers cannot expect netbooks to perform like your desktop PC or high-end laptop…” commented Samer Suheil, MD of Nawaiya, which is headquartered in Dubai Media City. “Nawaiya's PalmTop changed this kind of customer expectation. It likes to present its mini mobile notebook as a primary PC and not as a secondary PC.”

The device, which is expected to release in June or July this year, will come with AMD's 1.2GHz Turion 64 X2 (dual-core) CPU, ATI’s RS690E graphics card and run on the new Microsoft Windows 7 OS.

Other specifications include a 7-inch LCD touchscreen, 1.3 megapixel webcam, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and 3G (HSDPA) internet functionality.

Nawaiya is presently speaking with telecom providers to bundle the PalmTop with data packages, which Suheil believes will result in the product being offered at a “good price".
