Iraqi mobile operator Asiacell has extended its network to cover two additional provinces, increasing its coverage to all eighteen governorates.

The increased network coverage in Al-Anbar in the west of the country and Diyala on the border with Iran will make the operator’s services available to an additional three million potential subscribers. Asiacell announced in January that it had signed up six million subscribers.

Asiacell CEO Dr Diar Ahmed said: “We are very pleased with this success, which would never have been possible had it not been for the sincere efforts of our exceptional team of professionals, who have dedicated their expertise to overcoming the challenges that Asiacell faces on a daily basis as a result of regular terrorist attacks and unstable security conditions throughout the country.”

Asiacell began operations in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in 1999, and it was one of three operators awarded licences in August 2007. In December last year, Dr Ahmed called on the government to adopt a “strong and swift stance” to put a stop to attacks against the operator, following a number of terrorist attacks on the company.
