Etihad Airways will extend its network to 53 destinations when flights to Larnaca in Cyrpus launch this June, the airline announced on Monday.

The thrice-weekly service, operating on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, will leave Abu Dhabi at 9.40am arriving in Larnaca at 12.15pm. The return leg is scheduled to depart Cyrpus at 3.35pm and touch down in the UAE capital at 8.05pm.

James Hogan, Etihad’s CEO, believes the route will prove popular with European and UAE travellers.

“The launch of flights to Larnaca illustrates Etihad’s ambitions to strengthen our European network and we anticipate strong demand for flights which will help open up new commercial and cultural ties between the UAE and Cyprus,” he said.

He added high demand from Cypriots across the world is expected.

A two-class Airbus A320 carrying 140 passengers, with 20 seats in business class and 120 in economy, will be deployed on the Larnaca route.

Larnaca is located on the southern coast of Cyprus, near capital Nicosia and tourist resorts Paphos and Limassol. The city is the island's second largest commercial centre.

Once the Larnaca route is launched, Etihad will operate to 13 European cities including Athens, Brussels, London, Milan and Minsk.

In June, Etihad will introduce flights to Melbourne, Istanbul and Athens following the Larnaca launch.
