The prestigious British public school Sherborne is to open a campus in Qatar in September, it has been confirmed.
Sherborne, the alma mater of many ruling family members, including Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is to launch in Doha, following successful talks with the Outstanding Schools Oversight Committee (OSOC).
Officials said the Doha campus of the 500-year-old English school is expected to be completed by 2012, The Peninsula reported on Saturday.
Professor Richard Hodder Williams, chairman of the school’s governors said in a statement posted on the school website: “I am delighted to announce that Sherborne has been selected by the Supreme Education Council in Qatar to establish a branch campus this coming September."
He added: “The project will enable us to give one of the most progressive states in the Middle East our educational expertise to enhance their development, just as it will provide for us a regular income to support our growing bursary fund."
Sherborne’s Doha branch will be open to students from all nationalities, catering initially for kindergarten through to Year Six and rising annually to Year 13.
The school will first open in an existing building with plans to build a replica of the institution in Dorset near Doha within the next three years.
