Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is working with global chiefs on a nuclear energy project for the Gulf state, its director general has announced.
Kuwait is working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on executing a project for using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and on plans to deal with radiological disasters, KISR director general Naji Al-Mutairi in comments published by the KUNA news agency.
Already, the UAE and Qatar have signalled their intentions to begin an nuclear energy programme to help them meet future power demands.
Al-Mutairi added that the institute was implementing its sixth strategic plan entitled "New Development Opportunities and Challenges" whose aims were derived from Kuwait's plans for economic and social development.
KISR is also planning a project to attract international experts from American, European, and Australian universities to contribute in developing petroleum, water, and renewable energy centres and activities, he said.
Al-Mutairi also called for establishing a centre for crises management and early warning systems, an independent Gulf body specialised in scientific and technological development, and a Gulf company to market innovations and research results.
He said the Institute had executed 944 research projects, 655 of which were for governmental and private bodies and companies.
