Cisco has completed the network design for Saudi Arabia's Knowledge Economic City (KEC). The IT network will be used to deliver a wide range of smart services to the SR30 billion ($8 billion) development, using technologies from Cisco’s Connected Real Estate service portfolio.

The design was handed over to KEC by executives from Cisco Advisory Services, and will now form the blueprint for the infrastructure at the development, which is intended to create 20,000 jobs in Madinah, and house 150,000 residents.

Tahir Bawazir, CEO of KEC commented: “The project will attract global information and communications technology (ICT) firms who wish to establish operations and research-and-development facilities in the Kingdom.”

The smart city infrastructure will include a Security & Facilities Operations Centre that will manage delivery of services such as virtual presence, with the aim of making IP services available as a ‘fourth utility’ like power and water.

Thierry Martens, vice president Cisco Advisory Services said “Cisco`s innovative Connected Real Estate (CRE) services led approach enables customers to enhance the value of real estate, create new revenue opportunities and drive cost savings in addition to offering a world class lifestyle to the end users.Cisco perceives KEC as a showcase for a world class smart city in the region which transforms the way real estate is built, managed and experienced. Together with KEC, Cisco Advisory services has laid the foundation to build the right set of next generation smart services that help realize KEC’s smart city vision.”
