Fortinet has launched its FortiOS 4.0 operating system as it seeks to improve and enhance its own FortiGate multi-threat security appliances.

According to the company, the systems beneficial features include application control, data leakage prevention, WAN optimisation and SSL traffic inspection. The features have been designed in order to assist users with protecting the network through the removal of malicious traffic that may be impacting bandwidth and thus accelerate the delivery of non-malicious traffic.

"We're finding ourselves in a perfect storm as we launch the latest operating system for the FortiGate product line - we have a product that has cost-efficiency as part of its DNA and an environment that's looking for more ways to maximise every dollar spent without sacrificing security," said Ken Xie, founder, CEO and president, Fortinet.

The security features added to FortiOS, application control, DLP and SSL inspection, have been designed to address the rising level of cyber threats, the evolving nature of user behaviour, including broadening security to cover what is now considered to be part of the "network," driven by Web 2.0 innovations.

Continuing its strategy to marry security with complementary networking features, Fortinet added WAN optimisation to its new OS, giving network managers the ability to make this desirable network enhancement service a part of their overall network security infrastructure.

“FortiOS 4.0 is a great example of the technology innovation that is at Fortinet's core, and we're very pleased to be able to provide it to customers when they need it most," said Xie.
