US logistics security outfit E. J. Brooks and System Planning Corporation recently joined forces to create another new safety tool that is currently being marketed across the world - the Brooks-GlobalTrak system.

This IT solution increases visibility of the supply chain to allow shippers to respond to security breaches, in-transit interruptions or shifts in demand immediately.

The product works by incorporating an asset monitoring unit into the shipment, which wirelessly monitors electronic bolt and strap seals within the consignment.

Canadian solutions provider Descartes recently released CargoAssist, an electronic forwarding system that improves freight-booking processes, sends electronic waybills and ensures that consignments are handled quickly and efficiently at terminals around the world.

Although not a new technology per se, Mercator's SkyChain product won many admirers last year and should see a strong 2009. Fully compliant with IATA's e-freight initiative, SkyChain allows closer interaction with all members of the cargo community, including consignees, shippers, GSAs and relevant government bodies.

IBS, the company behind the hugely successful iCargo and iCargoLite solutions, has also developed a product that allows airlines to use an existing data warehouse and business intelligence tool, rather than having to build their own product from scratch.

The tool provides a historical analysis of long-term patterns that can support both the casual query and deep analysis, a point with which standard operational systems are unable to assist. So our bet for the IT solution to watch this year is IBS' aiCube - which comes with a ready data model, together with built-in reports and KPIs.
