A brand new play created by a group of Arab writers will be broadcast on BBC World Service later this month, making it the first-ever such play to be aired by writers from the Gulf.

The play called Al Amwaj (The Waves), explores storytelling and identity.

It is told through the experiences of taxi driver Noor Alam and his relationships with six passengers as he drives them to an unnamed coastal town.

The play is the product of a three day Writing-For-Radio workshop that was held by the award-winning writer Nick Warburton, and Marion Nancarrow, executive producer of BBC World Drama in 2008.

Thirty writers from Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Kuwait were invited to take part in the workshop.

The play unfolds through Noor’s conversations and interactions with his passengers, which reveal how their lives are inextricably linked.

It will be aired on BBC World On Mar. 21 at 20.00 GMT.
