Why ITSM and Asset Management Technologies are More Important in the Current Economic Downturn

by Toby Martin on Monday, 16 March 2009

In the current economic conditions affecting virtually every region of the world, many businesses are looking for ways to optimise and create greater operational efficiencies, not for the simple means of increasing the bottom line but as a means of survival. For those companies, one of the easiest places to turn to is IT asset management.

It is a well known fact that today many organisations suffer from a lack of data when it comes to their assets. Even those companies with the most elemental understanding of their assets cannot provide a common, unified, and most importantly accurate view of this data. Can those companies tell who procured assets, why they were procured, who paid for them or even who currently has physical possession of them? If not, then the company is operationally inefficient and at risk.

Consider the various governmental regulations which proscribe security of data on laptops, desktops and servers. If any of these items go missing, the organisation is liable for potential damages and the cost to ‘clean up’ these violations is considerable. What about environmental concerns? What about costs for leases and maintenance contracts which are not followed? This list goes on and on.

By taking advantage of technologies already present (security, anti-virus, help desk ticketing, financial) and combining them with IT Asset Management tools, this provides a “best-of-breed” solution in several ways:

• combining the data highlights potential missing data
• a unified system give a single operational view of the data
• decisions can be made with the business needs in mind.

As the global downturn continues to impact organisations far and wide, look for more operational efficiency and risk mitigation through asset management solutions.
