Sun Microsystems is setting its sights on the cloud, with the announcement of Sun Open Cloud Platform.

The company’s latest take on utility computing, includes cloud computing infrastructure based on open source software from Sun for customers to build their own clouds and also includes Sun’s own plans to launch a public cloud service.

The Sun Open Cloud Platform will utilise software including Java, MySQL, OpenSolaris and Open Storage to allow the creation of clouds based on open standards, which Sun says will both encourage more open and interoperable cloud environments, and create efficiencies in cost and scale, and make software development.

Sun will also release a set of cloud APIs under a creative commons licence, to allow developers to design their clouds to be compatible with Sun.

Dave Douglas, senior vice president, Cloud Computing, Sun Microsystems commented: “Sun’s approach to cloud computing blends our expertise in developing open source software and communities with unique design innovation. Sun’s Open Cloud platform is the first step in delivering on our vision of a world that has many clouds that are both open and interoperable. Our cloud architecture empowers developers with the expanded interoperability and freedom of choice they need to easily take advantage of the agility, efficiency and cost benefits of cloud computing.”

Virtual Data Center (VDC) capabilities acquired in Sun's purchase of Q-layer in January 2009 which provide everything an individual or team of developers needs to build and operate a datacenter in the cloud. The VDC provides a unified, integrated interface to stage an application running on any operating system within a cloud, including OpenSolaris, Linux or Windows.

The company also announced its own public cloud service, Sun Cloud, which will be targeting developers, students and start-ups, which will launch two offerings, Sun Cloud Storage Service and Sun Cloud Compute Service in the summer.
