The verdict in the trial of a prominent Egyptian businessman who is accused of paying a hitman to kill singer Suzan Tamim will be delivered on May 21, the chief judge has announced.

Al Mohammadi Qonsowa, the chief of the three-judge panel, said on Wednesday that the trial, which opened on Oct 18 and has been heard over 27 sessions, had finished.

Hisham Talaat Moustafa, an Egyptian billionaire businessman and senior member of the country’s ruling party, is accused of paying $2 million to Mohsen el Sokari, a former Egyptian police officer, to kill Tamim, UAE daily The National reported on Thursday.

The Lebanese singer was found dead in her Dubai apartment at Jumeirah Beach Residences on July 28, 2008.

The prosecution is demanding the death penalty and has also called for the confiscation of the money and unlicensed gun and bullets found at Mr el Sokari’s home in Cairo, after he was arrested on Aug 6.

The defence team has argued that the evidence presented to the court could not be relied on.

The judge ordered that the two defendants remain in custody until the verdict.
