Drinking water supplies in Bahrain will be increased by 60 million gallons a day, following the opening of a $400 million project.
The third and final phase of the Hidd Power Company's (HPC) desalination project increases output from 30 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) to 90 million gallons - 75 per cent of the country's current needs.
The plant was opened on Wednesday by Fahmi Al Jowder, Works Minister and Minister in charge of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA).
"All water produced by the plant now meets World Health Organisation (WHO) drinking water standards," said Jowder in comments published by Gulf Daily News on Thursday.
"The increase in production also enables us to reduce the ground water extraction from 25 million gallons to 10 million gallons a day."
