WATER CONSERVATION: Treating sewage water is part of a wider water conservation plan being led by the Saudi government.

The private sector is to be invited to help set up a company to produce and sell treated sewage water in Saudi, according to an official from the state-owned National Water Company (NWC).

In an interview with Saudi daily Saudi Gazette on Saturday Lowai Bin Ahmad Al Mosallam, the company’s executive president, said an independent company would be set up in collaboration with the private sector as part of a broader government-led water conservation plan.

The treated water would be for industrial, commercial and agricultural use in Jeddah and Riyadh, he said.

An NWC board meeting attended by the water and electricity minister last Wednesday to discuss proposed water and sanitary plans for the Kingdom’s two largest cities vowed to speed up the projects.

Privatization plans for the water and sanitary systems in Makkah, Taif, Madina, Dammam and Makkah had already been signed off by the minister, Al Mosallam said.

The three contracts, with a local consortium and multinational companies, covered consultation, financial, technical and legal aspects and, he added.

A study was currently being carried out by the NWC to inform a plan for managing water supply and demand in Riyadh and Jeddah this summer, Al Mosallam confirmed.
